Hauppauge WinTV nova S USB2: only a few channels were found

Hi Support-Team,

I've recently bought a Hauppauge WinTV nova S USB2 -Card and it works fine with the standard-Software WINTV and also with other Software like WatchTV.

Now i plan to buy ProgDVB Prof. and so i've installed at first the latest freeware version of ProgDVB.

But after installation and configuration the channel search finds only a few ASTRA channels like sky news or cnbc europe or channels from BetaDigital like deluxe music.

With the software WINTV or WatchTV I'am getting for example all the german channels i would like to watch like ARD, ZDF, RTL and so on.

What could be the reason for this ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Jörg

Set your channel list properties to sort by transponder, to perhaps get an idea on some systematic problem, from what kind of transponders are found or missing.

What kind of dish set is it, single or multi user?
One LNB or more, any switches involved?

What did you configure in DiSEqC / LNB settings?
What satellite(s) did you select? Make sure to not scan for Astra 28.2°E if LNB points to Astra 19.2°E, for example.

Details rule.

Hi Juergen,

now i have sort the channels by transponder. the first group is "10744 H - 22000" and it contains only five channels (arte, einsextra, Phoenix ...). All five entries are marked with a green hook, but all channels are not working. The channels for RTL, SAT1, ProSieben for example are completely missing .

The channels assigned to group "10818 H 22000" and the higher groups seem to work mostly.

I'm using a dish with one quad LNB and no switches.

My settings are:
- (BDA) Hauppauge 47xxx WinTV DVBS Tuner
- DiSEqC / LNB: Switch
- Satellites: Hotbird 6/7A/8, ASTRA 1F/1G/!H/1KR/1L and ASTRA 1E/3A

Jörg

You won't find Hotbird stations on 19.2°E.

As you do find ARD stations on 10744 H, your (first) LNB must be on 19.2°E.

So either your settings are wrong, or the details on your dish set are wrong.

On Astra 19.2°E, RTL stations are on 12188 H 27500.
ProSieben, SAT.1 and some more are at 12545 H 22000.

"- DiSEqC / LNB: Switch " - what's this supposed to mean?
You don't have a switch to be mentioned there, as the internal switches for polarisation (13 / 18 Volts) and band (22kHz off / on) are part of the Universal LNB itself. Ports for other users don't matter here, at all. So, as long as it's the common European style 'Universal' whatsoever, a Single LNB behaves exactly the same way as a Twin, Quad, Octo, whatever else...

Just a Dual, Quattro or Monoblock would be different. A Dual would be outdated, provided only LowBand fixed outputs for H and V for a 2/x or 3/x multiswitch, a Quattro (fixed outputs) needs to be attached to a 5/x (or above) multiswitch, and any Monoblock would include a DiSEqC switch, that would have to be included with your settings, with two LNBs there on.

So just set a linear Ku-band LNB connected to the tuner input directly, keep the default settings for LOFs and band switch frequency, adjust the position for Astra 19.2 (1F/1G/1H/1KR/1L).

Hi Juergen,

Yes, you're right, the DiSEqC setting to "Switch" was wrong.

Now i've changed the settings as follows:

- (BDA) Hauppauge 47xxx WinTV DVBS Tuner
- DiSEqC setting: no DiSEqC
- one LNB
- LNB settings: Ku-band, Power (marked) , default settings for LOF 1, Switch and LOF 2, one Satellite 0192 (ASTRA 1F/1G/1H/1KR/1L)

Unfortunately the result of the channel search is nearly the same as before: the five channels from the ARD family under 10744 H were found and the other channel RTL, SAT1, ... are missing completely.
It seems that i have a problem with channels with "H" - Polarisation ?

I have just discovered a strange behaviour: when i restart the ProgDBV software and choose directly after the restart a channel with "H"-Polarisation (e.g. arte) , the channel works !! And i can also switch between channel with "H" without problems.

But as soon as switch to a channel with "V"-Polarisation and want to switch back again, it fails again !

Jörg

Well, after a full scan, with allowing all 'lost' channels to be deleted, you should find out about general issues, like no horizontals or no high band.

However, often missing the horizontals has some truely analog reasons:
- to thin cable for the length used; copper diameter of core wire and shield do both matter, foils don't and should not be connected on the F plugs. Low DC resistance is important, as else you are losing to much voltage, due to the current draw
- corrosion on outside connectors, resulting in bad contact or partly short circuit
- weak inner contact sockets, like if previously inserted a to big pin from a ready made cable
- partly bad or weak power source, like a bad PCI slot or, on USB device, bad power supply unit for it
- excessive LNB current draw (look into the tuner's manual for limits, compare with LNB data sheet)
...
