Stuttering and Recorded TV

Today I recorded an NFL game and it was stuttering pretty bad. I assumed this was a buffering issue with my IPTV service, but when I replayed the recording with MPC HC there was no stuttering issues at all.
My question is whether or not recording a program with prog tv removes the impact of buffering automatically, or am I experiencing some sort of codec/playback issue with live tv only in ProgTV itself?
One interesting thing is that the recording is not 100% good. While there is no stuttering due to buffering there appears to be some missing parts of the game. It will randomly skip ahead at a few points (not often but once every 15 minutes it will skip ahead by 5 minutes or so).
