Naming files with EPG information -- does it work?

Hi - I'm a new user and looking for advice for those of you with more experience.
I'm trying to set up recordings so that the name of the show is in the file name, but it does not work. Using either %epg% or %epgtotal% both result in blanks in the file name when saving.
I've also tried experimenting with naming the file in the scheduler settings, but have only been able to use a static name... which seems to cause every day's program to record with the same name.
What is the right way to set this up so that the name of the program can be in the file name, and the dates can adjust dynamically so that it is easy to see the name and date of each recording?
