Unicode problem

Hi!
I completely don't understand why but ALL unicode versions simply don't work properly with my setup. Which is very standard: SS1, Celeron D, i865 chipset; Windows 2000 SP4, 2.17g TT driver, DirectX 9.0c, IE 6.0.
I mean, with v4.48 and below non-ASCII characters are replaced with something wrong but one could possibly live with that.
With later versions, I get complete garbage both on TV and ProgDVB windows (status bar, etc.). The garbages are different, lots of question marks on TV and lots of squares and kanji in ProgDVB. Actually, this applies to events, as channel names are displayed in "pre-unicode" way.
Am I missing something? Thanks!
