Hi,

Running a SkyStar 2 card with the BDA drivers and ProgDVB is very slow and non responsive.

I tried in my Vista 64 Bit machine - was slow. Removed the card - put it into a XP2800 machine with 1Gig of ram with a clean install of XP 32 Bit - same problem.

I can add the diseq - but it then hangs when scanning.

Something wrong with the hardware perhaps? I had it working in Linux - no issue and also previously in Windows.

I have another card (Philips chip) DVB - S - might try that and see.

If I leave the program running and trying to scan - I get an exeption error. Would it be any use to paste it here?

For what it is worth - I get teh same with the 4.x versions and an earlier 5.x version.

DVB Dream (as a test only ) also crashes on scan ....

The Philips card that I have is a DVB-S card - but not sure what driver to use. Windows picks it up as a 'multimedia' card - looks like a Skystar 1 card - but cant get it to work at all.

What big chips are on it?
An SS1 should include an SAA7146 and a TI DSP.

What tuner pack, exactly?

What PCB revision do you find mentioned on the board?
For example, rev. 2.1 or 1.5...
Don't forget to look for a manufacturer sticker...

Would give you devices then, a multimedia one and a (virtual) network device (or two).

BTW, the SS2 comes in various hardware revisions, of which the recent one, 2.8, requires the latest technisat drivers, due to a new tuner.

The Philips one has a SAA 7146A chip. Dont see a TI chip on it - unless its the small one in the cormer - cant see whats written on it. Ill take some pics later and upload.

As for the SkyStar2 card - its fairly old - so doubt it will need newer drivers. That said - Ive tried 4.4.3 and 4.4.0.

Should I be using the BDA driver or should I be using something else for Windows XP 32 Bit?

For your old SS2, use WDM drivers, to be able to use DiSEqC.


If the card with the SAA 7146 A comes with a video out port, it must have a DSP, almost as big, TMX0AV7111...
And with audio ports, of course.
May even be with a multi pin mini DIN connector (same size and outer shape as PS/2 mouse / keyboard or S-Video), for the breakout cable, if it's a Nexus 2.2, for example.

If not, it might perhaps be an SS3 -> old TT budget / haupauge Nova or similar.

Anyway, there must be some labels on it.

TT budget sounds familiar.

I just managed to fix something - I removed Astra from the Diseq list and left Hotbird - then it works - thats with using the SS2 driver from the 4.4.3 pack, not the BDA driver.

To load WDM drivers, are these Microsoft ones or something I need to download?

Never try MS drivers for DVB cards, as in most cases they don't work, are crap or simply wrong.
(Find out and) hit the manufacturers pages.

BTW, what LNB is on what DiSEqC port, physically?
ProgDVB settings must be true to work...
Be sure, to select the correct Astra, as there are several positions. Probably you are on 19.2E, not 23.5 or 28.2, for example.
What kind of switch, exactly?
Tested with a receiver or different software before?

I dont recall teh exact make of switch - its a 4 port unit that I used before without issues. Ill go look in the attic later and see whats written on it.

For some devices, there are two different kinds of drivers, WDM and BDA.
Windows Driver model is the the older one, introduced with Win9x. It needs a special device file for ProgDVB. For SS1 and SS2 those are integrated with each full install download.

BDA is the new driver architecture, that comes with more 'options' for user restrictions and a relatively simple application interface, but originally misses important feature like generic DiSEqC support. For relatively old hardware design, there is no BDA driver available. This goes for the SS1, for example.
To get DiSEqC available for BDA driven devices, some proprietary tricks are necessary, that often are non public. Else some selections have to be made in ProgDVB device options.
