Windows 98SE + ProgDVB + Pinnacle 300i testing

#1
I recently bought that card and i found your software. I tried it. It is the only that works, but it is very buggy on my system.

Since i have experience as hw analytic and betatester i will gladly help you to improve all trouble on Win98 version.

here is one forum for win9x where i gather additional information.
http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows-95-98-98SE-ME-f8.html

i have to reinstall system on my test hard drive where i shall perform all tests.

Pre-testing report:
Driver for Pinnacle 300i works correctly with ProgDVB. i was able to scan and tune dvbt signal. no video displayed - i heard only sound. reason is unknown to me.

Actual version for win98 requires dll export which is NOT a part of win98. progdvb work only because of KernelEX i use to extend my kernel dll exports. i will specify it more later in the evening.

progdvb crashes when used with ffd show and/or vsfilter. progdvb crashes always when exiting program. really really bad experience for normal user, but i was able to tune radio at least :D

thanks for tip, but when i have chosen VMR9 i get error message that VMR9 is not supported. thats surely not true because i use VMR9 with ATV2000 for analog tv capture and with Media Player Classic.

i and some Win9x freaks use Win98se because it has all that we require - mostly full dos support. My computer is some kind of experiment when pushing win9x to its topmost limits... pinnacle card and your software may prove that dvb-t is possible on such old os.

Try to use the W9x version of ProgDVB.
These are working on 9x, 2k and XP without difference here.
In fact I am sharing them here, as long as the Nexus is involved in HW mode.
For SW mode, you got to have the codecs and renderer available in all systems then.

So I suppose, it should do fine on your KernelEX system as well.

Or do you really have to use the .NET versions?

Or do you use BDA drivers with KernelEX successfully?
If so, please let me know ;)

BTW, MSFN is a fine place for 9x (default) users like me.
But I did not yet find a solution for my Digivox mini there.

kernel EX does not have anything to do with drivers, it affects applications. i use Win9x version which is available here for download but it really requests missing dll exports. to find the actual reason i have to reinstall windows 98 again

bda works great on Windows 98SE. just some stupid manufacturers (such as leadtek) write on their support pages that win98se does not support BDA streaming. what a nonsense. they do not distinguish windows 98 and windows 98SE. thats a really big difference (support for WDM and BDA is in 98SE with DX8/9 and later.)

i suspect that progdvb is unable to run activemovie window from some case... i have to find it out...

allrigh, i tried several codecs and missing moonlight filter has been added.

after three days i was able to see dvb-t signal. so i see that dvbt signal is not so clear or good as i thought before :D

suggested codec combination is FFDshow and moonlight because other codecs are not...

the version that worked a bit better is 4.85.3, very early versions were not supporting pinnacle 300i well.

Looks promising, so i will spend some time with so much bugreports as possible to help :)

Hope you have a spare physical drive to play around with no risk.

Also think about trying older versions of ProgDVB 4.
I have around 90 versions installed here, to compare.
Before 4.5x, there has been no difference between 9x and NTx.
Of course, device compatibility may be an issue then.

I see. So it's the manufacturer to blame, specially if a driver won't even install manually.
DirectX8 or 9 are pretty normal to have on 9x, as they have been available officially and still are (except of the latest updates, perhaps).

Well, a manufacturer, that behaves this way, is supposed to do the same to 2k and XP users in the not so very far future.
A no go argument, from my point of view...

However, are you using BDA drivers for your pinnacle device?
I am planning to go for a DVB-T device a.s.a.p., but that must be compatible with 9x then, somehow.
Plus, would the original application work for it, or any other?

No such trouble here, ever.
With my Nexus, I have been using ProgDVB on Win98SE for many years now, on more than a handful of computers. I am using the unofficial updates from Creopard for a long time, but did not try KernelEX for now.
And on my second machine I am also using ProgDVB, over it's media client and WLAN and to play files. No issues on ActiveMovie ever (yet).

Regarding DVB-T, I can compare with DVB-S directly here, both with PC equipment and on a DVB-S/DVB-T combined STB (Skymaster DTC 5000)..
At least in my region, DVB-T is recompressed to a noticeably lower data rate.
Means, a lower quality is normal, up to a certain degree.
This also seems to be the reason for DVB-T signals to be delayed for about 5 seconds, compared to DVB-S, and 10 against analogue cable, on the same local station.

VMR9 if possible

I am still trying to work with version 4.85.x. its stability is supreme when it comes to normal work and TV watching.

i have here one very strange problem, which is a bit mystery for me. i have here 6 stations, two radios and rest is normal tv...

each tv station has same specifications except bitrate which may vary:
MP2
720x576

two stations are running normally, but rest are choppy. i cant say why. the videostreams are almost same... sometimes some tvs are tuned and run normally...

So the BDA driver does install without error, on your 9x?

Sometimes AC3 audio involved, perhaps?
BTW, how are L & Q readings?

"3xhybrid.sys" driver is whql certified and it was created on year 2003/4 when MS was accepting certifications for win98se. that means they created the driver with win98 DDK (driver development kit).

later the drivers were developed with 2k or XP and their compatibility was not full.

AC3 is surely not involved because it has to report activity with icon next to clock. i dont know the actual reason of the trouble. i suspect the sound... i have to try activate the AC3 while disabling FFD audio.. i shall see.

L Q readings?

quality is at 100 percent, level at 50-60...

the problem is very mysterious to me. nothing i was suspecting is responsible for the trouble... except the broadcast method itself.

#14
ok. i restored windows backup. system is now clear without any secondary issues.

1. no version of ProgDVB was able to run without Kernel Ex version 0.3.5
2. some channels are affected with error i mentioned before - sound chopping and video with abnormal and unstable framerate (25,47 fps). can be problem of quite low CPU performance (Pentium III-S 1260@1473Mhz) and low quality singnal. Once signal lost the error may appear. Also can be caused with wrong encoding settings at side of broadcast.
3. for any decoding FFDshow is being used. the sound for radios is not working now. reason unknown. Elecard decoders has not been installed.

still working with 4.85.x
