can someone please explain to me the advantages of having an x64 version of progdvb ?

i have an x2 processor and x64 vista but i have been told elsewere that the only advantage of being x64 is in the access of of 4gb and over of memory and there is no advantage of having x64dvbs software over x86 .

can someone please explain why progdvb is testing x64 software?

Testing is done for getting the test results, first of all.


A couple of years ago, I've read quite similar questions about running 16 bit or 32 bit applications on a 32 bit machine and OS. And some more years before this, people discussed about 8 or 16 bit applications on 16 bit computers.
As usual, always there were some pros and contras...
And never there was an easy and short answer of general validity...

I don't want to repeat this again.
Mainly because theoretical benefits may really matter in quite rare cases, but in daily life often would not even be recognized.

This for, i will try to give a short overview on my point of view, with no intention for a discussion following up.

First of all, please keep in mind, performance and security resp. reliability depend on many more aspects than just bus width, CPU cores and speed or alike. The real computer is a terribly complex system, not to be compared with others without a perfectly defined test environment. But in any case, this is supposed to be far away from our personal needs.
So general discussion in most cases would lead nowhere to.

Instead perhaps go for some literature, visit some boards on general computing and alike.

Meanwhile please consider the idea of a software developer trying to be flexible enough to adapt to the latest platforms, even if it may not be really necessary yet. Perhaps preparing the way for future improvement, that may not be fully available from the older environments, also partly due to plans and intrigues of M$, who force the computer market, to always follow the latest hype and by this also drop support for earlier technologies, sooner or later.

Now, we did not get any details on real benefits of the 64 bit versions (yet), but as ProgDVB is NOT open source, this may as well belong to the secrets of the author. Giving away such details is his personal decision alone...

Users in fact may find out about the real value of a platform, simply by comparing behaviour systematically. That's one thing this place is good for. But I still don't find any kind of such feedback over here...

And as this does not seem to be vital in any way, I'm staying with what I have, 32 bits on a single core, for as long as it does all I need. Never change a well working system...

That's all I have to tell on this subject, at least for now.
