Problem with Kathrein-Unicable System and ProgDvb

#1
Hi,

i'm having problems with getting all channels into progdvb with my system at home.

Technique:

Kathrein EXU 908 UniCable System 9to1 for up to 8 Receivers.
4 Kathrein 902sw Receivers, all on one cable.
2xquad LNB on AStra 19,2 and Hotbird 13,0.
Laptop uses XP, Centrino Duo, 512Ram.

All Receivers are working fine with all channels(approx 2000).

Problem:

I took the cable from one receiver and attached it to a Terratec Cinergy 2 Usb Tv-Adapter connected to my notebook. The problem is that i only get 40% signal and 0% quality. I used the newest progdvb v6 and only found about 5 channels on astra which worked well, but i didn't know which settings to use.
Each receiver has a own frequency on the EXU 908 f.e. 1516mhz and needs to be "registered" at the Exu 908 via the on-screen menu of the receiver.

Is there a modul or plugin which can register the cinergy box or the laptop(or progdvb) at the system?
Which settings shall i use for getting hotbird and astra?
Is the problem a known issue? Does it work theoretically?

Please help me, because i want to view all channels on my notebook and record some things.

I you need further info let me know!

PS: I'm sorry for my english, because im from Germany:-)

Unicable systems are not meant to work, not even theoretically.

First of all, you've mentioned, the DVB tuner itself won't tune to anything else than a fixed and user specific frequency.
Means, the Ku band or 1st IF / L band tuning would have to be done over DiSEqC 2.x or a similar protocol, inside of the distribution unit, not on the local tuner.

Due to the working principle of such a proprietary system, double conversion, even the basic tuning calculation differs from any other satellite reception concept. This is CCTV, not normal satellite reception, as we know it.

Thanks for fast answer Juergen,

looks like you're also from Germany(Servus:-)).

Back to the topic:

So easily spoken, there will be no way to get progdvb functional with all channels on my Unicable system!?

Just a theoriretical question:

If there would be a box(tuner with usb for Pc) on the market which is able to register itself at the EXU 908, like the receivers do, and then get the right "bands" from it, will it work then?(if a software would support this)

Don't blame me if this sounds silly, cause im a newbie in Sat-Technique.

Edit: What do you mean with CCTV and double conversion?

The system you are using is very special, because you don't tune to the satellite transponder with the receiver, but to an extra in between converter stage. The satellite tuner is located somewhere else and it must be controlled
in a way normal devices are not, like true DiSEqC 2.x.

Normally the satellite band(s) is / are converted from Ku (or C band) to the standard frequency range of satellite tuners, 950 - 2150 MHz, as the original signals from above 10 GHz won't easily go through long cables. This is done by use of a fixed local oscillator inside of the LNB for each (part) band. (On both Ku bands) the LOF value of e.g. 9750 MHz or 10600 MHz would get subtracted from the transponder frequency. This is the job of the (first) converter.

So the common satellite tuner would technically see an input range from 950 to 2150 MHz, from which it selects transponders.

By getting told the (true) LOF value, the DVB software recalculates the original transponder frequencies, for controls and display.

On your system, this is done somewhere else, in the central distribution system, which would then tune in a different way, to not provide the base band / data streams, but everything still modulated onto a given second Intermediate frequency, user specific, that would be the only one, the receivers tuner tunes to.
Basically, two tuners involved, the variable upstairs and another one, fixed frequency, in your box. The box itself won't get bands from above, whatever you try.

So a normal DVB software would not provide the maths and methods to handle this.
As your receiver in fact does not tune satellite stations, but only the user specific downlink channel, there's nothing ProgDVB can do.
It simply does not know anything about the first (variable) tuning stage.
Obviously you're getting in ProgDVB, what's tuned above already. Just by using it for the second converter stage, seeing the user channel downlink only.
You may still have to use the receiver's controls to switch transponders up there.

Perhaps a DVB application might get rewritten, to
- control two oscillator frequencies separately, one for transponder tuning, by special full DiSEqC controls, the other for setting the user channel, directly on the box
- calculate all this the proper way
- provide the extra settings and options required
...
but all this needs quite some effort and a suitable and free Software Develpoment Kit, specially for that device(s).

Not easy, to motivate a software author, just for a handful of possible users.

However, still you did not tell us anything precise about the .device file, nor placed a link to it, as requested before.
Without this, no way at all, to answer the 'theoretical question', as we don't know what it really is or does...
