1) When I import an m3u file with channels in it, the group names are not being saved correctly (this had been working fine since forever until recently).
Example in the screenshot group name is .Sport Daily -- there is a leading . but in the channel list all dots in all group names have been removed. This causes incorrect sorting
2) I have the channel list sorted by name, but whenever I update the source, any new groups are added at the bottom of the list. I have to sort by something else then again sort by name to get them all back in order. Surely you can re-sort the list in the current sort order after every tv source update.

2. Yes, new channels always added to end of list. For example, this allows you to save manual sorting of channels.

1. I changed the leading character to * and it sorts properly now. It seems you are removing leading . characters from tvg-title
2. Maybe make a new settings option to always auto-sort. I never do manual sorting
